Project Overview

Powering the Smart Grid

For this fully CG broadcast spot, AES Ohio wanted to visualize something that’s usually invisible: how energy moves through a community, and how their technology keeps it flowing seamlessly. Working with agency partner Chernoff Newman, we brought that idea to life by building an entire small town from scratch in 3D.

Every home, street, tree, storefront, and sidewalk in the spot was custom modeled and designed by our team. We treated the town like a real place, obsessing over scale, texture, lighting, and detail. Look closely and you’ll even see interiors through windows, subtle set dressing, and lived-in touches that give the world depth and detail.

To represent energy itself, we created flowing, luminous light ribbons that travel through the town, weaving between homes, down streets, and into neighborhoods. These colorful streams become the visual language of the spot, showing how power connects people, businesses, and infrastructure in a continuous, living system.

From world-building and modeling to animation, lighting, rendering, and finishing, Spacejunk handled all aspects of the 3D production. The final spot blends technical precision and storytelling, making complex infrastructure feel accessible, optimistic, and alive.

The work was recognized with multiple honors, including Best in Category at the CSCA Awards and several ADDY Awards, celebrating both its craft and creative impact.
